Development from 1980's-1990's
As the women's studies program gained it's footing in academia, the subject began to leak into other forms of study such as the english and languages departments. At this time the department was still relatively new and not considered to have the same academic status as other departments such as STEM fields, and was thus labeled as "alternative education."
Off campus, the political and social activity changed from radical change rhetoric to inclusivity and general activism. Abortion was still an ongoing topic of discussion, particualry from undergraduates seeking faculty support for the movement. As a result of the rising visibility of LGBTQIA+ community, the focus on gender inclusivity became a main focus for the women's studies department and gender research was incorporated into the program.
